Job Description:

BASIC FUNCTION:

The graduate program director (GPD) is a full-time faculty member with administrative responsibilities for graduate academic programs. S/he provides leadership in academic matters and is responsible to the Vice Provost of Graduate and Professional Studies and in concert with the Criminal Justice and Criminology (CJC) Department Chair. In accordance with University policies and procedures, the program director functions to ensure the quality of instruction, curriculum and faculty development within the program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The GPD in ADJ/HS is an integral part of the CJC program. The GPD works very closely with both the Vice Provost of Graduate and Professional Studies and the CJC Department Chair. The GPD position reports to the Vice Provost on business management of the program and the CJC Department Chair for issues related to teaching and curriculum development. The duties of the GPD shall include, but are not limited to, those listed below.

ADMINISTRATION:

  • Provide leadership for program development and enhancement.
  • Partners with recruiting team to follow up on applicants.
  • Participates in information sessions and graduate fairs, when requested.
  • Work with Salve's alumni office as well as ADJ/HS professional networks and industry to recruit new students.
  • Actively serves on the Graduate Council.
  • Prepares annual reports, program reviews, and budget submissions in collaboration with the CJC Department Chair.
  • Serves as the liaison between faculty members of the program and the administration on mutual concerns.
  • Works collaboratively with the undergraduate CJC program to recruit and develop 5th year students.
  • Advise students in two program populations: students in the 5th year, combined bachelor's/master's program and working adult learners.

CURRICULUM:

  • Lead program development and assessment, innovative teaching methods, and technologically mediated learning.
  • Review and evaluate existing program in terms of curriculum and learning outcomes. method and credit; collaborate with faculty to develop new curriculum when needed.
  • Prepare recommendations on course offerings in collaboration with the CJC Department Chair and Graduate Office.
  • Plan a regular cycle of course offerings and prepare/revise the program sections as appropriate.
  • Furnish copies of all program syllabi to the CJC Department Chair and Office of Graduate and Professional Studies.

PROGRAM FACULTY:

Actively participates in recruiting of adjunct faculty in compliance with Salve's hiring processes. Submits to the CJC Department Chair, Graduate office, and Office of Academic Affairs, the names of full-time faculty recommended for assignments in excess of their contractual loads. As appropriate, submit a copy of the summary of program faculty meetings to the CJC Department Chair, Graduate Office, and the Office of Academic Affairs. Inform program faculty about decisions and developments in the Graduate Council.

EVENTS:

Ensure that the program is represented at graduate-related University and community events

RESOLUTION OF CONFLICTS:

Attempt informally to resolve conflicts between program faculty/students, faculty/faculty, faculty/administration, and students/administration

STUDENTS:

  • Work with admissions to support recruiting process
  • Assure compliance with FERPA guidelines

EVALUATION OF PERFORMANCE :

The Vice Provost of Graduate Studies in concert with the CJC Department Chair will conduct an evaluation of Director's performance at the end of the academic year to ensure that responsibilities are being addressed and expectations are being met.


Requirements:

  • The successful applicant should have progressive command leadership experience in a local, state, or federal law enforcement agency. Experience in the areas of candidate recruitment, in-service and continuing education, supervision, and performance evaluation is also highly desirable.
  • Master's degree in criminal justice or related field is required; doctorate preferred.
  • Strong supervisory skills preferably within higher education.
  • The successful applicant will be a dynamic, strategic, forward-thinking individual who is poised to carry the ADJ/HS graduate program to the next level in educating future justice practitioners.

TEACHING:

The teaching load for this position is 2/2. The selected candidate will possess a strong and demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence, particularly as it relates to core and elective courses in the curriculum. Exhibit excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work cooperatively and collegially with colleagues, staff, outside justice agencies, and community organizations. Demonstrate a genuine interest in student development and success. And contribute to the university's achievement of success through a commitment to its mission, vision, and values.
